Gavin "Tweek" Dempsey is one of the best Smash 4 players in the world. His wins at 2GGC: MKLeo Saga and Low Tier City 5 are a testament to that. But it hasn't always been easy for him.

In a Twitlonger posted on Nov. 26, Tweek went into detail about the struggle that brought him to where he stands today. The story begins all the way in Tweek's childhood, when he first found his passion for games.

His first love in video games was Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which makes sense given his proficiency in the similar Smash 4. Even as he dug into his love of Brawl, however, Tweek seemed to fall into himself.

He became less and less social, causing his parents concern as he lost interest in sports and school. While he made friends online, he continued to disconnect from people in his real life. He entered a depressive state. And, to make matters worse, his performances in Brawl tournaments, as well as in Melee and Project M, left something to be desired.

When Smash 4 came out, Tweek saw success right away, winning locals with his then-signature Bowser Jr. As the meta progressed, however, Tweek felt more and more pressure to leave his fan-favorite main behind in favor of a more viable one.

Cloud was the first character Tweek loved aside from Bowser Jr., but the switch quickly earned him the ire of the community, a feeling he'd never experienced before. In spite of this, Tweek pushed on with Cloud, determined to be the best.

Really inspirational stuff here. Thanks for giving me some awesome motivation today, Tweek. 

At first his parents were reluctant to let him pursue Smash 4. Once the 2GG circuit was established, Tweek was able to convince his parents to let him delay college, at least temporarily, to try for Smash 4 success.

The rest is history. Tweek says that nowadays he's in a much happier state emotionally. He urges all his followers to chase their dreams, and promises that he will continue to succeed. "This is just the beginning," he says. "I don't plan on stopping anytime soon."
