Out of all of Overwatch's DPS heroes, there's one hero who isn't seen as much within the meta as much as the others: Sombra. Even Doomfist, who continues to have some game-changing bugs, sees a higher pickrate than her. She has a very specific play style to get used to, but she can be an incredible addition to any team composition.
Here are five tips you should keep in mind when playing Sombra!
5. Hack Health Packs for Your Team
Hacking health packs is crucial to Sombra's usage in a game. While denying the enemies of health is good, it's more important to hack key health packs for both yourself and your own team. A hacked health pack regenerates faster and provides ultimate charge -- and the big health packs provide an even bigger ultimate charge than the smaller ones. Using your own health packs adds to ultimate charge.
You'll have to periodically return and Hack them again, since there is a time limit indicated by the glowing skull icon. You should usually only Hack one or two health packs at a time. But make sure you let your team know which ones you'll Hack, so they can help farm EMP.
4. Use Your Translocator Defensively
Sombra's Translocator can be used for her to get past the choke discreetly and set up somewhere safe before distracting the enemy team. It's important, however, you have a Translocator active before you engage in a fight. Unless you know you can easily take out the hero you're about to fight, make sure you have a way of getting out of there.
Sombra's Translocator should only be used aggressively when going in for an EMP. You can throw it and Translocate above the enemy team and use your EMP to render their abilities useless.
3. Pick Your Targets Wisely
Sombra's Hack ability also works on other heroes, and it can be horrific for some. Tanks like Reinhardt can be melted without their shield. If there's a pesky Tracer or Genji harassing your healers, Hack them before they get away so you can punish the enemy. You'll have the best luck hacking targets from high grounds or surprising them from behind.
Her Opportunist ability allows her to see low-health enemies, which can also be crucial to picking off important members of the enemy team. You can use your Translocator to get near them and deliver the final blow.
If you use EMP, you also need to make sure high priority targets like Reinhardt, Zenyatta, Mercy or Zarya get hit by it, otherwise the team fight may go badly.
2. Fight Enemies at Close Range
Sombra's DPS output isn't as devastating as some heroes, but she can do a lot of damage if used correctly. Her gun won't do as much damage from far away, but the closer she is to a target, the more likely you'll be able to eliminate them.
Getting up at almost melee-range to an enemy can almost always secure a kill, especially if you surprise them from behind. Sombra's Thermoptic Camo -- also known as her invisibility -- can allow you to sneak up considerably close behind enemies and unload your gun into their head.
1. Never EMP Without Your Team
Check where your team is before you use your ultimate. Some heroes don't have ultimates that require teamwork, but Sombra's EMP is very dependent on having the rest of her team around. Her gun won't do enough damage to take out multiple heroes at once, unless they are all at very low health.
You should almost never push in with the intentions of using EMP unless your team is right behind you, or you're coordinating ultimates together -- like D.Va's Self-Destruct or Zarya's Graviton Surge.
