Tom Thayer is a renowned American sports pundit as well as a former American football center and guard. He is currently the color analyst for Chicago Bears broadcasts on WBBM Newsradio. The Chicago Bears selected him with the 91st selection in round four of the 1983 NFL draft in April 1983. Tom was also one of the 25 players chosen in the USFL’s 1983 Territorial Draft by the Chicago Blitz. It took place in January 1983.

The Bears were unaware that he had already agreed to terms with the Blitz to play for George Allen, the Blitz’s head coach, just hours before. According to Tom, he was informed that he was their fourth-round pick in a mock draft, but the Chicago Blitz offered him first-round money, which was authorized.

He played in the USFL with the Arizona Outlaws, Arizona Wranglers, and Blitz from 1983 to 1985. He then signed with the Bears for the 1985 season. Mark Bortz, Richard Dent, Dave Duerson, Mike Richardson, Willie Gault, and Jimbo Covert were other members of the 1983 draft class. They later went on to win Super Bowl XX.
