In April 2012, he replaced Bobby Petrino after he left Arkansas as the head coach. Prior to that, he worked as Head Football Coach for two years at the Detroit Lions. He also worked at the San Francisco 49ers from 1997 to 2002 as Head Football Coach.

His Coaching career began at Northern Michigan University where he worked for one year as a Quarterbacks Coach. He later went to California State University, Fullerton where he got a job as the Quarterbacks coach for two years. Later he went to Louisville, Kentucky where he joined the University of Louisville and worked for one year as the Quarterbacks Coach.

In 1985, he served as the Wide Receiver coach at USFL Orlando Renegades in Orlando, Florida for less than one year. He later moved to Berkeley, California where he worked at UC Berkeley for one year as an Offensive Coordinator. He also worked at Green Bay Packers for three years as the Quarterbacks Coach before moving back to UC Berkeley which was in 1996 for less than a year made the Head Football Coach.
