The first Starbucks location in north Dade County has opened in the Aventura Mall.
The eatery/retail store, which began serving customers in May, is one of the latest additions to the shopping complex at 19501 Biscayne Blvd.
The Aventura Mall is Starbucks’ eighth site in South Florida. The popular chain of coffee bars, founded 26 years ago in Seattle, has grown to more than 1,070 locations throughout the United States and Canada.
At Starbucks, professional coffee bartenders, or baristas, roast more than 30 varieties of java.
Locally-baked fresh pastries, espresso and a line of low-fat iced coffee drinks also are available.
Customers can purchase confections, gift baskets, espresso makers, mugs, plunger pots, grinders, storage jars, water filters, carafes, coffee makers, coffee cookbooks and Starbucks’ private label coffee blends.
To celebrate the arrival of Starbucks, mall managers have begun offering live music by pianist Mel Olman in the courtyard near the restaurant.
Olman has accompanied such stars as Lola Falana, Chuck Berry, Rodney Dangerfield and Gladys Knight and the Pips.
The free concerts are conducted from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays and Sundays.
The mall’s regular hours are 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.

Pembroke mall evolving
A department store plans to expand and three new stores have opened at the Pembroke Lakes Mall in Pembroke Pines.
The 80,000-square-foot space that had been occupied by Mervyn’s department store until March 19 soon will be taken over by Dillard Department Stores.
Dillard intends to use the area to sell men’s clothing and home furnishings beginning in August or September, said Terry Webb, manager of the mall at 11401 Pines Blvd.
Two of the new stores, Far East Furniture and the AT&T; Wireless Store, began serving customers in November.
Far East Furniture replaced York Health and Fitness. AT&T; Wireless is filling the space that was occupied by Security World, Webb said.
Elsewhere in the mall, The Disney Store opened in February.
In the food court, Bloom’s was replaced in December by the Wall Street Cafe, another deli-style eatery, Webb said.
New nail salon opens
After years of working in other people’s nail salons, Glenda McCumber has opened her own.
Her shop, Nails are Forever, is at 2005 Tyler St. in Hollywood. McCumber and her two technicians began accepting clients on March 25.
McCumber said she has found that being a business owner is rewarding.
“You have something that you can call your own,” she said.
For now, the salon specializes in acrylic nails, pedicures and manicures. Based on customer demand, McCumber wants to expand by hiring three more nail technicians and add waxing and facial services.
The salon’s hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Evening appointments are available on request. Call 954-927-1900.
