The Whale menceritakan kisah seorang guru bahasa Inggris bernama Charlie (Brendan Fraser) yang mengalami obesitas.
Setiap sedang mengajar secara daring, ia selalu mematikan kameranya karena merasa malu akan penampilannya.
Ia yang hidup sendirian setelah meninggalkan anak dan istrinya ini, mulai mengkonsumsi makanan secara berlebih ketika pacarnya meninggal dunia.
Ia melakukannya untuk menghilangkan rasa stress dan depresi, sampai akhirnya berat badan Charlie mencapai 272 kg dan membuatnya tidak bisa berumur panjang.
Sejak saat itu, Charlie berusaha kembali lagi kepada anaknya Ellie (Sadie Sink) untuk mengembalikan momen-momen yang telah hilang sebelumnya.
