Police have been searching for a suspect in the murder of a homeless man more than a week ago, and a watchful Broward sheriff’s detective nabbed the alleged killer in a Pompano Beach neighborhood Wednesday night.
Sgt. Kevin Forsberg was conducting surveillance in the 400 block of NE 22nd Avenue east of Federal Highway in Pompano when he saw Ruddy Germain, who was wanted in the shooting death of Joseph Surace, a 28-year-old homeless man.
Surace was found with gunshot wounds at about 9:40 p.m. Aug. 11, between a Burger King and 7-Eleven along Federal Highway in Pompano Beach. He was taken to Broward Health North medical center where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives viewed surveillance videos obtained from businesses in the area and identified Germain as the shooter. They later determined the suspect and victim knew each other and had been arguing prior to the shooting, according to the police report.
Forsberg arrested Germain, 35, of Pompano Beach, and charged him with one count of second-degree murder with a firearm. He was ordered to remain in the Broward County Jail without bond at his Thursday morning court appearance.
