Pratt & Whitney cut another 330 jobs this week from its local work force in Palm Beach County as part of a cost saving plan announced earlier this year.
On Thursday, most of the workers got their pink slips effective immediately with 30 employees volunteering to the leave the company. Some of the workers will be notified today, said Nancy Colaguori, a spokeswoman at Pratt’s Government Engines & Space Propulsion operation in northwest Palm Beach County.
In January, the jet engine maker outlined plans to eliminate 1,500 local jobs this year. Reductions in defense spending and intense competition led Pratt & Whitney to make the cuts, Colaguori said. Pratt & Whitney makes jet engines for commercial and military aircraft.
The first phase of the downsizing began in February, when 430 employees left the company. In October, the company plans to cut another 110 hourly and 310 salaried employees. The remaining 300 positions will be eliminated through attrition, Colaguori said. The company is not planning any layoffs in 1994 barring unforeseen program changes, she said.
Laid off employees will receive a severance package that includes two weeks’ pay in lieu of notice and a $3,000 lump sum payment based on the signing of a waiver that precludes any legal action against the company. They also receive assistance in job hunting, graduated severance and health care benefits based on length of service, and two years of recall consideration.
The downsizing at Pratt & Whitney comes on the heels of 200 job cuts at Allied Signal in Fort Lauderdale last week and 500 job cuts at International Business Machines Corp. in Boca Raton earlier this year.
The Business Development Board of Palm Beach County estimated the Pratt & Whitney layoffs will mean about a $100 million loss to the county in economic activity. That figure includes retail spending on groceries, gas and clothes as well as a loss in taxes and real estate spending as people leave the area to find work.
Employment at Pratt & Whitney’s local operations has been dropping steadily for the past three years. As recently as 1990, the company had 8,400 local workers. By the end of the year, it plans to have around 5,000 local employees. After the latest round of layoffs, Pratt & Whitney employs 5,470 people in Palm Beach County.
The local layoffs are part of a companywide restructuring.
