Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
I teach middle school math and science in a high-needs neighborhood. My students love when they get the opportunity to sit in our classroom library to read non-fiction math and science novels/short stories or to complete their assignments. This is why I always try to create a library space in my classroom that is warm and inviting. They always really appreciate this space and they love having such a space as part of our classroom.
The classroom library is a very important space in my classroom and is cherished by students, as they love the opportunity to sit in seats that are different than the usual classroom chairs.
This is why I requested the set of brightly colored pillows. My students would love sitting on these while reading or doing assignments. Often times they focus better when they have the chance to sit in special spaces such as a classroom library. The fact that they are water resistant and washable is wonderful as well because they can be easily cleaned and disinfected to keep the area nice and sanitary as it will surely be used often. The carpet will be used to ground the space and provide a comfortable place for my students to be able to sit with the pillows as they read or complete assignments. The Hidden Figures novels will be a great addition to my library as I do not have as many novels about math topics as I do about science topics. Also the story that the book tells will surely be intriguing and motivational for my students.
Starting the school year off with an updated classroom library will be such an inspiration for my students. Their eyes will surely light up when they see the bright new pillows, new books, and the solar system carpet.
