A Broward man was sentenced to life in prison in Broward County Circuit Court Wednesday for murdering a disabled Lauderhill man he had befriended.

Richard Garber, 54, was charged with first-degree murder in the July 1999 death of Brazilian-born Janio Moraesv, 30, outside Moraes’ apartment on Inverrary Drive. Earlier this year, a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder.

Moraes had been injured in a construction accident and Garber had helped to care for him.
