Kitty Spencer, niece to Princess Diana, is just as famous for her body transformation as she is for her links to royalty, her marriage to her billionaire husband Michael Lewis and her entry into the fashion world as Dolce & Gabbana’s “It” girl.

Not so long ago, Kitty’s weight was the centre of attention. She was body-shamed, ate unhealthy food and never worked out. Then her life was turned upside down when she scored her first international modelling job, and it was during a moment between herself and designer Domenico Dolce that she had a revelation about her self image. Here’s Kitty’s transformation journey.

Online trolls cruelly told Spencer to “lay off the cake” afrer a photo she posted on Instagram. Photo: @

In 2016, Kitty got a first-hand taste of what it was like to be in the public eye and have her appearance scrutinised by all segments of society. She was in the south of France and posted a bikini picture of herself on her Instagram page. Someone commented: “Lay off the cake, darling. You’re too fat.” Kitty didn’t let the comment go and simply said: “I’m sorry that you feel the need to post nasty comments under photographs of people you don’t know. I’ve yet to see unkind behaviour do any good in the world.”

In 2010 London’s Evening Standard published an interview with Kitty where she said she had been called “chunky” and was told she had “big thighs”.

Kitty’s mother Victoria Aitken has spoken publicly about her own battles with anorexia and drug addiction in the past. Growing up with her mum and siblings in Cape Town, Kitty said scales were banned in the house.

According to Hello! magazine, her mum told her it was “unhealthy” to have scales in the home and she never knew how much she weighed at any given point.

Town and Country reports Kitty was motivated to lose weight after she landed her first modelling job in 2017. She said it was a “confidence building exercise”. She was 26 years old and spoke to her family about being approached to make her Dolce & Gabbana debut in Milan. She decided to do it, pledging a new gym routine and focusing on eating healthily for the job.

She said while she was proud that she had lost weight, when she was at a fitting, eponymous designer Domenico Dolce appeared annoyed that her sizes had changed. It was in that moment that Kitty realised her size had never been important to the designers and being chosen wasn’t linked to her body at all.

Changing pace

A focus on going to the gym was a radical change for the blonde beauty. Back in 2010 she told the Evening Standard that there was a gym in her house but she had never been inside. She said she hated exercise and while many people have an obsession with weight, she thought “life too boring to try and keep thin”. She said she loved instant noodles with grated cheese and also indulged in pizza and pasta whenever she wanted.

She said if she was thin, people would still comment on her weight and she believed that as long as she was happy doing what she was doing, then that was all that really mattered. In that interview, she said she was tired of being called a “society girl” and was determined to make a name for herself in her own way. That much as least she has surely achieved.
