He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and sociology from Marquette University. John worked with the Associated Press from 1987 to 2006, rising to the position of assistant bureau chief in Washington. He assisted in the development of several of the organization’s early digital products, such as its online elections service.
The next year, he worked as a national investigative reporter for The Washington Post. He was named editor-in-chief of The Washington Times a year later. After internal upheavals and financial uncertainties among the paper’s owners, John quit the station in 2009.
He returned to the paper in 2013 to supervise its content, digital, and commercial strategies. During his time there, he assisted in the creation of a new national subscription-only edition aimed at tablets, cell phones, and other mobile devices.
In addition, John assisted in the development of digital strategies to increase web traffic, the development of new products and collaborations, and the leadership of a reorganization of the company’s advertising and sales staff. In December 2015, he departed the network to become the chief creative officer of the mobile news app Circa.
From 2009 to 2015, he was also the president of Packard Media Group. In 2010, he was also the executive editor of the Center for Public Integrity. He assisted in the establishment of iWatch News while there but left a few months later to join Newsweek/The Daily Beast in May 2011. He joined The Hill as executive vice president of digital video after leaving Circa. He was there for two years before leaving to create his own media company.
Before that, he joined Fox News as an opinion contributor in October 2019. In 2020, a new show named “Just The News” was introduced, as well as a news media outlet and website.
