Fred Allen, the cherished creator and director of the Thomasville Music & Drama Troupe, as well as a longtime music, choral, and drama instructor at Thomasville High School, passed away on Saturday at the age of 88 following a brief illness. The news has prompted social media posts, tributes, and memories from the many local youth that benefited from his time in Thomasville.

Prominent singer/songwriter Stephanie Bentley, who was a Troupe standout for many years and worked with Allen since a young age, discussed the influence of Allen’s family on her life and career from her Nashville home.

“It’s hard to put into words the impact that Fred Allen had on my life. His and Winnie’s mentorship and friendship helped to shape me into who I am today,” Bentley said. “When I was studying music with Fred, I knew I was in the presence of greatness because there was an unspoken magic about him… and yet I was humbled by the fact that he saw something special in me, which gave me the faith to step into my dreams.”

Allen identified and nurtured the abilities of four Miss Georgias from Thomasville, including Marlesa Ball Greiner, during the 1970s and 80s. She spoke highly of her voice coach and teacher as well.

“Next to family, Fred Allen has had more impact on my life than anyone else. His influence will continue to resonate deep within my soul forever,” said Greiner, who tours as a contemporary Christian singer and speaker, teaches music and directs a youth show choir in Dothan, Alabama.

“The life lessons that I learned from him, professionally and personally, will continue to be my standard,” she added. “My life is richer for having had his heartfelt guidance from the time I was 11 years old through adulthood.”

Allen supported, coached, and mentored NaGuanda Miller Nobles, who is now well-known for her operatic and gospel performances. She has just given the gift to the next generation by establishing The High Art Foundation, which provides funding for four music scholarships for deserving students, including a Fred and Winnie Allen Scholarship.

Apart from overseeing the Thomasville Music & Drama Troupe for over 35 years, he also founded and managed the Thomasville High School Showstoppers. As the longstanding director of the THS one-act play team, he accumulated an unmatched winning streak at regional and state competitions. He also trained numerous student musicians and thespians to produce award-winning performances at literary meets and festivals organized by the Georgia High School Association.
