KOMPAS.com - Thomas Pesquet, astronot Badan Antariksa Eropa (ESA), membagikan foto menakjubkan Bumi pada malam hari yang diambil saat Stasiun Luar Angkasa Internasional (ISS).
Bukan sembarang foto, Pesquet berhasil mengabadikan fenomena petir biru yang langka ketika ISS terbang di atas Italia.
Ini termasuk transient luminous event (TLE) atau petir atmosfer, istilah yang digunakan peneliti untuk merujuk pada fenomena petir berumur pendek yang terjadi jauh di atas ketinggian petir normal dan awan badai.
Ada banyak jenis pencahayaan TLE petir atmosfer yang berwarna-warni.
Dilansir dari IFL Science, Senin (11/10/2021), berdasarkan warna yang satu ini, peristiwa itu mungkin berupa jet biru (blue jet) atau kilatan biru yang langka.
Pelepasan listrik seperti kilat ini memancar dari puncak awan guntur hingga 50 kilometer ke stratosfer dan berlangsung hanya beberapa milidetik.
Mereka biasanya sulit dilihat dari Bumi, karena awan badai dan atmosfer kita menghalangi.
Namun, ISS dilengkapi dengan Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM), yang mampu melaporkan peristiwa petir paling aneh yang terjadi jauh di atas awan.
Ini telah melihat beberapa peristiwa luar biasa selama bertahun-tahun.
“Ini adalah kejadian yang sangat langka dan kami memiliki fasilitas di luar laboratorium Columbus Eropa yang didedikasikan untuk mengamati kilatan cahaya. Stasiun Luar Angkasa sangat cocok untuk observatorium ini karena terbang di atas khatulistiwa di mana ada lebih banyak badai petir,” tulis Pesquet dalam keterangan foto.
“Teman saya, Andreas Mogensen memiliki peran besar dalam foto ini. Dia adalah orang pertama yang menangkap fenomena petir biru dari luar angkasa, hanya dalam 10 hari di Stasiun Luar Angkasa dia melakukan semua ini, legenda! Ini membuktikan nilai fasilitas (ISS) untuk memantau kilatan,” imbuh dia.
Selama beberapa dekade, hanya sedikit bukti yang mendukung peristiwa TLE.
Ada laporan anekdot dari pilot tetapi tidak banyak yang bisa dilanjutkan oleh para ilmuwan.
Sekarang kita tahu banyak jenis petir yang tidak biasa ini – jet, sprite, dan elf – ada.
Menggunakan ISS untuk mempelajari atmosfer bagian atas memungkinkan peneliti mengumpulkan data yang luar biasa untuk lebih memahami dimensi badai petir yang sebelumnya belum dijelajahi.
