The first shovel of dirt was scooped from the ground on Tuesday for the first permanent building on Florida Atlantic University’s Davie campus.

Within two years, a four-story, $12 million building will be erected. The building, the first of four planned at the site, will house classrooms, an auditorium, student union, computer lab, music practice rooms and administrative offices.

FAU shares the Davie campus with Broward Community College. About 3,000 FAU students attend classes there. FAU officials estimate enrollment in Davie will soar to 10,000 by the end of the decade.
