Attack On Titan is a masterpiece not only for its gripping action, beautiful animation and huge plot twists, but also for its incredible writing and nuanced dialogue. The last moments of episode 53, ‘Perfect Game’ is a perfect example of series creator Hajime Isayama’s genius writing at work.
In this episode, Zeke/The Beast Titan has cornered Commander Erwin, Levi and the other scout soldiers outside Shiganshina District while Eren and the rest of the Levi Squad have their hands full fighting Berthold/The Colossal Titan.
Most of the soldiers have been obliterated by the barrage of rocks thrown by Zeke and the last few survivors are hiding behind some buildings like sitting ducks, waiting for their turns to die. It seemed like all hope was lost but then… a leader rose
The Ultimate Sacrifice
Erwin tells Levi that he has a plan to defeat Zeke but in order to execute it, he would have to give his life as well as lead the remaining soldiers to their deaths by charging straight at Zeke. Levi would then take this opportunity to sneak up behind the Beast Titan and kill him.
A Selfish Desire
Then ensues one of the greatest monologues that has ever been delivered in anime history. Erwin admits he is hesitant on going through with the plan because he wants to see the secrets that are kept in Eren’s basement, saying that he has always wanted to uncover the truth about humanity and the world ever since he was a child.
This is an incredible revelation as it completely changed the way audiences viewed this character. All this time, we thought that Erwin fought to the point of being willing to sacrifice his comrades’ lives to save humanity. In reality, he did it in order to fulfill his boyhood dreams.
It’s another showcase of Isayama’s ability to write emotionally layered and complex characters.
So Close
This scene is also extremely underrated considering how heartbreaking it truly is. After all the comrades Erwin had to sacrifice and all the pain he had to endure (which includes losing an arm), he has to give up on his dream when he’s finally so close to realising it. It’s a great example of the cruelty of the world that Isayama has crafted.
It was also an iconic moment for Levi when he looks at Erwin, a man he's followed for several years in the eyes and tells him: “Give up on your dreams and die”. Levi then assured Erwin that his death won’t be in vain as he will make sure the Beast Titan would fall. This speaks volumes about Levi’s resolve.
Acceptance
After hearing Levi’s words, Erwin smiles, accepting his fate and now understands what needs to be done. He has fully entrusted Levi to make sure his sacrifice and the sacrifices of their fallen comrades won’t be for nothing.
The dialogue in this scene was truly a work of art and the impact of Erwin’s sacrifice should be appreciated more by the Attack On Titan fandom as without it, the scouts would not have made it as far as they did.
