With a name like the Sauer Apple Saloon, it shouldn’t be surprising that apple-flavored drinks are a specialty of the house at this new business in downtown Hollywood.
“We’re trying to find and stock every apple-flavored liquor on the market,” said Irena Sauer, who co-owns the saloon with her husband, Philip Sauer.
The couple opened the Sauer Apple Saloon in mid-November at 1814 Harrison St. and named it after themselves and their 6-month-old daughter, Claudia Nicole.
“Her nickname is Apple. This is her place,” said Irena Sauer, whose last name is pronounced “sour.”
“We signed the lease for [the Sauer Apple] in August, on our one-year wedding anniversary,” she said.
The saloon replaces Harpoon Harry’s restaurant. When they moved in, the couple redecorated and changed the bar from a “U” to an “L” shape and painted the walls an apple green.
The reshaped bar creates more room for guests and live entertainment. Bands play from 9 p.m. until closing Thursdays through Saturdays. Outside in the front, a new countertop with stools and walk-up windows allows customers to order drinks from staffers tending bar inside the saloon.
The saloon can accommodate up to 80 people inside, and outdoor sidewalk tables and counter space have seating for another 30.
Patrons may order from a full line of alcoholic beverages, including wines from California, imported beers, and several brands of Polish vodka, said Irena Sauer, a native of Poland.
Apple-flavored liquors include a malt drink, vodka, cordials and rum. Two house martinis, the Mom’s Apple Pie and Mom’s Apple Pie A La Mode, are made from Irena Sauer’s secret recipes.
“They both taste like apple pie fresh from the oven,” Philip Sauer said. “People love them.”
Martinis cost from $6 to $10. Beer, either tap or bottled, ranges from $3 to $4.
Food is not prepared on the premises, but the couple have menus from several neighboring restaurants and arrangements with each to deliver the items.
A 2-for-1 happy hour is from 4 to 7 p.m. daily. With each order, customers receive one drink and a token that can be redeemed anytime, said Irena Sauer, who moved to South Florida two years ago from Detroit, where she owned a bar.
She now manages the Sauer Apple full time, overseeing a staff of six employees. Her husband, an American-born former New Yorker of Polish and Russian descent, is a building inspector for Hollywood.
“We cater to both locals and tourists,” Philip Sauer said. “People come here to relax and have a drink.”
