Dion LeCorn, a 6-0 205-pound junior receiver for Ocala Trinity Catholic, has been the primary target of the Celtics high-flying aerial offense this season.
Despite playing in a high-scoring contest with Pahokee for the Class 2B state championship at FIU Community Stadium, LeCorn was virtually missing from the Celtics’ offense.
That was because the versatile athlete was used where he was needed and that was on defense. He finished with seven tackles and two pass breakups. The Ocala native was listed on the depth chart as a backup at cornerback.
“We had to use him so much on defense today,” Trinity coach Kerwin Bell said. “We had to have him on defense with [Pahokee’s] fast receivers.”
Offensively, LeCorn finished the afternoon with just two catches for 7 yards. His first reception didn’t come until 6:47 left in the second quarter. He had two kickoff returns for 59 yards.
“Playing him on defense did take away a little bit from our offense,” Bell said. “Defense wins championships, and we had to make that sacrifice. He was gassed and couldn’t run the routs that he normally does. He hung in there though.”
LeCorn led the team in receiving heading into the championship with 1,151 yards on 59 receptions and 11 touchdowns.
“It was another win and state championship,” LeCorn said. “Because I played defense today, I got a little tired.”
LeCorn, who has been playing football for 10 years, said he already is thinking about playing in college.
He said he’s interested in Florida and Central Florida.
