A Super Target recently won Town Council approval to be built at the northeast corner of Stirling Road and University Drive, just west of Southwest 76th Avenue.
The popular superstore’s first Davie site was given the nod in a 4-0 vote, with Councilwoman Lisa Hubert absent.
When the site plan was unveiled, residents raised concerns about buffers and traffic circulation. To accommodate them, the retail complex will not have an entrance off 76th Avenue. Instead, entranceways will be off University Drive and Stirling Road.
“It seemed to be a good place for a Target,” said Councilwoman Susan Starkey. “I was behind it because all the concerns raised by residents were worked out.”
Plans call for a 185,000-square-foot store in a plaza with other retail stores. The smaller outlets will occupy about 68,000 square feet. A 7,000-square-foot bank also is part of the plan.
The site plan features a 7.6-acre retention lake to serve the development and offers some open space. The drainage lake will separate the proposed development from a nursery to the north and the single-family housing development Exotic Acres to the east.
Town staff asked the developer to improve the pedestrian connections between Target and the other retail stores, so shoppers wouldn’t have to drive to the different parcels.
Councilman Mike Crowley said he had concerns about the landscape buffer on University Drive, but he said the project’s positive economic impact outweighed those issues.
The design of the building calls for a stucco finish in earth tones.
Details on what departments the store will feature have not yet been unveiled, but Super Target is known for having a garden center and food store.
There will be 1,255 parking spaces, about 100 more than required.
In May, the council approved modifying the zoning at the 44-acre site to allow for more commercial development.
