During his time there, he uplifted his profile and worked on the station’s talk shows as an analyst. But he first worked at the Chicago Tribune in 1970. He was drafted into the army during the Vietnam War after reporting for Tribune for six months.

In addition, he was later promoted to public relations duty in Germany and Fort Lewis, Washington. But 9n 1971, he returned to the Tribune where he held the responsibility for the coverage of courts, religion, neighborhoods, and police before taking his leave in 1980.

During his thirty years as a columnist, he has been the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 1989, the Edward Scott Beck Award for foreign reporting, and the Illinois United Press International award.
