Miami-Dade County

President George W. Bush announced Wednesday that he plans to nominate Circuit Judge Cecilia Altonaga of Miami to join the federal court for the Southern District of Florida.

Altonaga, of Coral Gables, has served three years on the circuit court for Miami-Dade County, having been appointed by Bush’s brother, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, in August 1999.

Altonaga was one of three judges nominated by the president Wednesday for federal judgeships.

Altonaga worked seven years as an assistant prosecutor in the Miami-Dade County State Attorney’s office, then served as a county court judge 1996 to 1999. She received her undergraduate degree from Florida International University in 1983 and her Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School in 1986.

Southern District runs from Indian River County south to Key West and west to Highlands County.
