Catie Bowne often practices her premier event, the 300-meter hurdles, without a track to run on. That did nothing to hinder her performance at the Class 1A State Track and Field Championships at Coral Springs High on Friday.
The sophomore from Coral Springs Christian successfully defended her title in the event, winning for the third consecutive year with a time of 44.96. She held off Shannon Stuckmon of Gainesville P.K. Yonge in the final 15 meters.
Bowne accounted for 26 of her teams 27 points, as the Crusaders finished in sixth place. P.K. Yonge won the girls’ team title with 77 points. Upperroom Christian was 10th with 15 points.
P.K. Yonge boys also won the team title with 47 points. Upperroom Christian tied for fifth with Tallahassee Maclay at 31 points.
It has been a long journey since Bowne ran her first 300-hurdle race as a sixth-grader and practiced jumping over hedges as an eighth-grader at Fort Lauderdale Christian.
But her track career actually began as a distance runner in the mile.
“I remember we were at a meet at Dade Christian, and my coach said we needed someone to run in the 300 meters and he asked me if I’d would do it,” Bowne said. “I’m glad I learned from the hedges. What ever I can jump over, I feel lucky.”
After transferring to Coral Springs Christian as a freshman, Bowne earned the luxury of practicing with hurdles on a softball field. On Tuesday the team got to practice at Coral Springs High.
“I kind of like it without a track, cause you can take advantage of the track,” Bowne said. “If you have a track every day, you can say ‘Yeah it’s a track.’ I get to a track once or twice a week, and I’m so much more serious then. I work with what I got, and it works.”
Bowne was nearly impressive in two other events. She finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 12.59 and second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.92. She lost to P.K. Yonge’s Valerie Flournoy in both races.
“It’s a tribute to her abilities as well as her mental outlook,” Coral Springs Christian coach Jake Von Scherrer said. “She’s a self-motivator and so coachable. Technically she is so sound. The only challenge is holding her back and keeping her patient.”
EAGLES’ BOYS HANG ON
The Upperroom Christian boys hung tough and got some quality points in field and distance events.
Senior Brandon Eddiness earned 14 points for his team by winning the shot put with a throw of 52-8 and was fifth in the discus at 138-2. Teammate Joshua Mack was second in the shot put at 52-6.
It was a third consecutive state meet for Eddiness. He finished fourth in the shot put last year.
Byron Willis had a strong performance in the distance events for the Soaring Eagles. He was fifth in the 800 at 2:01.91 and sixth in the 1,600 at 4:32.42.
The Upperroom Christian girls’ 4×100 relay team of ShaBrell Linder, Juquetta Butler, Tanisha Brewton and Shantori Laramore were third with a time of 51.30. Butler was also fourth in the long jump at 17-3.
University School had a pair of top-five finishes. Xanquanii Lee was second in the triple jump with a leap of 45-1, and Rachel Friedman was third in the pole vault at 9-0. Chris McGlover of Broward Christian was fourth in the 100 with a time of 11.25.
