Bob Walk Career

Bob was a spot starter and swingman during his final years with the Pirates. The squad won three successive NL East titles from 1990 to 1992. During Game Five of the 1992 National League Championship Series against Atlanta, manager Jim Leyland pulled Bob from the bullpen and made him a surprise starter. This turned out to be his most memorable outing. He pitched a complete-game three-hitter to avoid elimination from a series.

Unfortunately, the Pirates were defeated in seven games. After Francisco Cabrera hit the two-run game-winning single against Stan Belinda to give Atlanta the series victory, the pitcher warmed up in the bullpen. Despite both Bob and Cabrera being right-handers and having walked Damon Berryhill to load the bases, Leyland decided to keep Belinda on the mound to face Cabrera.

He is a retired American professional baseball pitcher called “The Whirly Bird.” Bob played for the Philadelphia Phillies in Major League Baseball (MLB) in 1980. From 1981 to 1983, he was a member of the Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates. During his debut season in Philadelphia, Bob won 11 regular-season games and Game One of the 1980 World Series.

In 1993, he posted an NL-worst 5.68 ERA and retired after the season. The Pirates honored Bob on June 30, 2007, by hosting a Stadium Give Away bobblehead night against the Washington Nationals. He is a radio and AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh broadcaster for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He also works as a fill-in game analyst for MLB on FOX.
