The Rosamond Gifford Zoo of Syracuse, New York recently bid farewell to one of its beloved members: Ashley Sheppard. With undying devotion and affection for all creatures alike, Ashley left an indelible mark at Rosamond Gifford Zoo over her decade-long tenure; both on animals she cared for as well as on people she inspired. Who was Ashley Sheppard?
Ashley began working at Rosamond Gifford Zoo as a part-time employee in 2013. However, due to her passion and commitment she quickly rose through the ranks to Department Manager by 2018. As Department Manager she oversaw the welfare of an array of animals including mammals, birds, reptiles amphibians fish. Ashley formed strong bonds with residents such as elephants giraffes penguins otters that was evident to all.
Ashley was also a natural educator, actively engaged in conservation efforts and sharing knowledge of animal behavior. Her kind, professional manner and infectious enthusiasm was infectious for all who met her; beyond professional duties she was also the loving wife and mother to Avery and Mason; cherishing family time outdoors while engaging in hobbies like cooking and reading.
What Happened to Ashley Sheppard?
In March 2023, Ashley’s life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with stomach cancer after experiencing severe abdominal pain and weight loss. Although she underwent intensive treatments, her condition worsened further and eventually led to her peaceful passing on October 29, 2023. Ashley’s death left a profound mark on the zoo community as a whole as well as family and friends of Ashley in general, sparking widespread outpouring of sorrow on social media as tributes came pour in.
Ashley Sheppard fought an intense and short battle against stomach cancer. Over several months, she met its challenges bravely while remaining committed to her family and animal companions. When Ashley passed peacefully at home on December 18, 2016, it marked a triumphant end to an extraordinary struggle against illness.

Ashley will be honored with a funeral and burial, followed by a memorial event hosted at the zoo that features slideshow of memories as well as tributes from colleagues and family. Ashley’s legacy will live on in our hearts as it touched so many lives.
Ashley Sheppard’s journey at Rosamond Gifford Zoo was more than simply professional; it also represented her deep commitment to wildlife conservation and making our world a better place.
