In the 2020 NBA draft, Edwards was the first overall pick selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He had more debut success putting up 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in 25 minutes with the win against the Detroit Pistons. Due to injuries in the main roster, Edwards gave him an early chance to be a starter. In his first season with the Timber Wolves Edwards played 72 games and started 55 of those. At the end of the season, his impact on the team got him various recognitions such as runner-up in Rookie of the Year voting, NBA All-Rookie first team, and the third youngest player to score 40 plus points in NBA history.
